Car Rental

roadIf you’re planning to go beyond downtown Portland or the other areas close to downtown, and especially if you’re going to be making any day-trips, you’ll probably want to rent a car for your visit to the area. You’ve got lots of options for places to rent a car, the most obvious being right at the airport. But if you only want to rent a car for a day or two during your trip, there are other car rental locations around town, too. Here are some of the places you can rent a car in Portland:

  • At Portland Airport – Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise and Hertz all have rental counters on the airport grounds.
  • Near Portland Airport – Alamo, E-Z Rental and National are off airport grounds, but not far from the airport – and there are shuttles from the airport to and from those rental offices.
  • Away from Portland Airport – Lots of companies have car rental offices in downtown Portland as well as areas close to downtown, including Enterprise, Hertz, Alamo, Avis, Bee, National, Thrifty, Budget, Crown and Rent-a-Wreck.

Should you be staying in Portland for an extended period, or even thinking about moving here and going car-less, one option you might consider instead of renting a car is becoming a member of Flexcar. There are lots of Flexcars in the Portland Metro area, and if you only need a car occasionally it’s much cheaper than owning one or even renting sometimes. Plus, for the eco-conscious among us, most (if not all) of the Flexcars in Portland are hybrids or otherwise friendly to the environment. This arrangement doesn’t work if you’re just in town for a few days and looking for transportation to the coast or Mt. St. Helens, but it’s a great alternative if you’re living in Portland without a car or staying here for awhile. You can find out more at Flexcar’s official website here.
